Amtrak has announced a concentrated infrastructure project at A-Interlocking in Washington’s First Street Tunnel, south of Union Station. The August release schedules the work after service ends October 16 and before service resumes October 26.
The project is intended to replace aging switches and crossovers, rehabilitate the track base, and install modern electric switch systems. Amtrak says the confined work area makes a coordinated outage more practical than phased construction and identifies reliability as a principal objective.
The announcement describes significant reductions and cancellations on affected routes south of Washington, alongside selected train segments and bus connections. Travelers should use Amtrak’s current booking and service information for their particular journey rather than assume normal through service. The original release includes the affected-route table and links to project information.
