The LEGO Group says it has started using e-methanol as a material input for more than 90 types of elements, including connectors, cross axles, steering wheels, and minifigure hands. Its September 30 update describes the change as part of a broader effort to increase renewable and recycled inputs.
The company explains that the production pathway combines hydrogen made using renewable energy with carbon captured from a biogas facility. It says the work follows several years of testing and collaboration with suppliers.
The update also identifies an important limit: the material enters a continuous production system that still contains virgin fossil inputs. It therefore does not describe every affected element as entirely fossil-free. Readers can review the original update for the company’s description of its production approach and the scope of this step.
