The U.S. National Science Foundation has announced ELEGANT, a program intended to move low-dimensional semiconductor technologies from laboratory demonstrations toward platforms that manufacturers can use. The September 17 announcement identifies artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, and advanced communications among the intended application areas.
The program emphasizes industry involvement throughout development. NSF said participating teams’ progress would be evaluated with industry partners, with the aim of reducing the technical uncertainty that can slow adoption of new manufacturing approaches.
Five translation themes cover materials, process technology and design tools, device and chip demonstrations, manufacturing readiness, and acceleration using artificial intelligence. NSF also released an offering seeking an ecosystem coordinator and expert performer teams. Organizations interested in the initiative should review the linked agency announcement and offering documents for current participation requirements.
